South of Tahiti you’ll find the Austral Islands. The main island here is called Rurutu. Rurutu is also known as Whale Island it is the annual home to migrating humpback whales. From July-October each year, after their journey from the Antarctic, these gentle giants reproduce, calve, and nurse in the warm shallow waters of Rurutu. Two trips a day are organized by the dive operator which feature shallow dives to view the mammals up close. The trips also offer snorkelers the opportunity to witness these gentle giants.
